★ KEY ISSUE — 1st Appearance of Witchboy!

This is the first appearance of Witchboy — as announced directly on the cover: "He appeared in the dark of night… The strange creature called… WITCHBOY!" Witchboy (Klarion the Witch Boy) went on to become one of DC's most enduring supernatural characters, later reimagined by Grant Morrison in Seven Soldiers of Victory and appearing across multiple DC titles and animated series. This is his debut — a genuine Bronze Age key issue.

Cover Details

Jack Kirby's dynamic cover depicts Etrigan the Demon recoiling in agony as Witchboy — a pale, dark-haired boy in a black outfit — blasts him with crackling yellow-green magical energy. A crowd of shadowy, sinister figures looms in the background. The bold black masthead with the flaming "The Demon" logo in red and yellow is quintessential Kirby Bronze Age design. The DC bullet logo appears in the upper left alongside the title logo. The composition perfectly captures the supernatural horror tone of the series.

Jack Kirby — The King of Comics

Jack Kirby is widely regarded as the single most important creator in American comic book history — co-creator of Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the New Gods, and dozens of other iconic characters. The Demon was one of Kirby's signature DC creations, launched in 1972 as part of his celebrated DC tenure. Kirby wrote, drew, and edited the entire original Demon series, making every issue a pure Kirby artifact. Books from this run are among the most collectible Bronze Age DC comics.

Series Context

The Demon (Volume 1) ran for 16 issues from 1972–1974, entirely written and drawn by Jack Kirby. The series introduced Etrigan the Demon — a rhyming demon bonded to Jason Blood — and established the supernatural corner of the DC Universe that would influence creators for decades. Issue #7 is one of the most significant issues in the run due to Witchboy's debut.
