Cover Details — The Evil Witch

A spectacular Jack Kirby cover — one of the most dynamic and visually explosive in the entire Demon run. The cover blurb reads: "An Evil Witch whose powers stagger the mind and freeze the soul! Only one would dare to defy her!—" The composition depicts Etrigan the Demon — in his iconic red and yellow costume — being blasted backward off a castle wall by a massive explosion of yellow-green energy, while a red-haired woman (the Evil Witch) gestures with supernatural power and a costumed villain in orange and blue hurls a massive boulder from above. The deep purple sky, crumbling stone castle walls, and billowing black smoke clouds create a dramatic, gothic atmosphere. The flaming The Demon masthead blazes across the top in red and orange against the purple sky. The DC/The Demon bullet logo appears upper left. Comics Code Authority stamp and issue details (No. 5, Jan., 30683) appear upper right.

Featured Characters

  • Etrigan the Demon — depicted in red and yellow costume, blasted backward by magical energy
  • The Evil Witch — red-haired supernatural antagonist, central figure
  • Costumed Villain — orange and blue costume, hurling boulder from above

Jack Kirby — The King of Comics

Jack Kirby is the single most important creator in American comic book history — co-creator of Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk, Thor, the New Gods, and dozens of other iconic characters. The Demon was one of Kirby's signature DC creations, launched in 1972 as part of his celebrated DC tenure. Kirby wrote, drew, and edited the entire original Demon series — making every issue a pure, unadulterated Kirby artifact. Issue #5 from January 1973 is a prime example of Kirby's supernatural monster-action storytelling at its Bronze Age peak.

Series Context

The Demon (Volume 1) ran for 16 issues from 1972–1974, entirely written and drawn by Jack Kirby. The series introduced Etrigan the Demon — a rhyming demon bonded to the immortal Jason Blood since the fall of Camelot — and established the supernatural corner of the DC Universe that would influence creators for decades. Issue #5 is an early issue in the run, making it among the most sought-after for Kirby collectors and DC Bronze Age enthusiasts.

Back Cover — Aurora A|FX Racing Set — Iconic Christmas Ad

Features one of the most beloved and collectible back cover advertisements of the Bronze Age — the Aurora A|FX Racing Set Christmas ad: "4 Ways to Get the A|FX Racing Set You Want for Christmas." The ad features four humorous cut-out reminder notes for kids to leave for their parents:

  • Egg tray of the refrigerator: "I'm not yolking around. I'd really eat up a Model Motoring A|FX set this Christmas. I'll also eat up anything you put on my plate until then."
  • Under the windshield wiper of dad's car: "All I want for Christmas are the fastest cars you can drive without a license. Hint: They begin with an 'A', have an 'F' in the middle and end with an 'X'. P.S. They're made by the Model Motoring Division of Aurora."
  • Father's briefcase: "To be brief, an A|FX Racing Set is what I want for Christmas."
  • Father's shaving mirror: "There will be some pretty close shaves when you and your son are racing A|FX cars on Christmas Day."

Tagline: "Aurora. We're for real." A|FX, Aurora Products Corporation, 44 Cherry Valley Road, West Hempstead, New York 11552. © 1971 Aurora Products Corp. Aurora went out of business in 1977, making their advertisements genuine collectible artifacts of American toy history. This is one of the most charming and nostalgic back cover ads in the Bronze Age DC catalog.
