Cover Details — The Reincarnators
One of the most visually spectacular covers in the entire Demon run — Jack Kirby at his most explosive. The cover features a massive, terrifying green dragon/serpent creature with enormous curved horns, fanged jaws wide open, and a coiled serpentine body dominating the composition against a blazing yellow-orange background of fire and destruction. Two chained figures — one of whom is Jason Blood — struggle against the beast's chains in the lower foreground, while Etrigan the Demon appears in the lower right corner. The cover blurbs read: "If you lived a former life… then you may become a victim of the REINCARNATORS!" and "Meet Jason Blood as The Demon." The DC bullet logo with "The Demon" appears in the upper left, and the bold red and black The Demon masthead blazes across the top. Comics Code Authority stamp visible upper right. This is one of Kirby's most dynamic and memorable Bronze Age covers.
Featured Characters
- Etrigan the Demon — lower right corner
- Jason Blood — chained figure in foreground (the human host of Etrigan)
- The Reincarnators — supernatural antagonists
- Giant Green Dragon/Serpent Creature — dominant cover image
Jason Blood — Etrigan's Human Host
This issue prominently features Jason Blood — the immortal human bonded to Etrigan the Demon since the fall of Camelot. The cover blurb "Meet Jason Blood as The Demon" highlights the dual nature of the character that Kirby established as central to the series. Jason Blood is one of DC's most enduring supernatural characters, appearing across decades of DC continuity.
Jack Kirby — The King of Comics
Jack Kirby is the single most important creator in American comic book history — co-creator of Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk, Thor, the New Gods, and dozens of other iconic characters. The Demon was one of Kirby's signature DC creations, launched in 1972 as part of his celebrated DC tenure. Kirby wrote, drew, and edited the entire original Demon series — making every issue a pure, unadulterated Kirby artifact. Issue #3 from November 1972 is one of the earliest issues of the series and features some of Kirby's most dynamic monster design work.
Series Context
The Demon (Volume 1) ran for 16 issues from 1972–1974, entirely written and drawn by Jack Kirby. The series introduced Etrigan the Demon — a rhyming demon bonded to the immortal Jason Blood — and established the supernatural corner of the DC Universe that would influence creators for decades. Early issues like #3 are among the most sought-after in the run for their raw Kirby energy and monster-cover spectacle.
Back Cover — Aurora "The Imposters" — Rare Toy Ad
Features a spectacular and highly collectible full-page advertisement for Aurora Products Corp.'s The Imposters — "Tame Looking Cars That Change Into… Mean Racing Machines." The ad depicts a Volkswagen Beetle transforming into a stretched, low-slung drag racing machine — a concept that predates Transformers by over a decade. Copy reads: "The Imposters. You have to see them do their stuff. Take hold of the stick shift and get ready for a shock. Suddenly a mild mannered street machine changes into nearly a foot of road gobbling racing machine. Front end out. Engine up, 400 cubes. Then up pops the driver, ready to cut down all comers. The Imposters. They're a lot more car than meets the eye." Aurora Products Corp., 44 Cherry Valley Road, West Hempstead, NY 11552. © 1972. This is an exceptionally rare and nostalgic toy advertisement — Aurora went out of business in 1977, making their ads genuine collectible artifacts. The "more car than meets the eye" tagline is a remarkable proto-Transformers moment.
