Cover Details — Gorr Appearance

One of the most visually explosive covers in the Fantastic Four Bronze Age run — depicting the massive yellow-furred beast Gorr rampaging through a city, clutching the Invisible Woman (Sue Richards) in one giant fist while the Thing (Ben Grimm) leaps to attack. The Human Torch (Johnny Storm) streaks across the lower right corner in flames. The cover blurbs read: "Mightier than Kong! Deadlier than Godzilla! This is— GORR!" and "Not just another giant gorilla story! You'll gasp at the startling Secret of Gorr!!" Speech bubbles add drama: "If I don't take 'im out with one punch— —Sue's a dead woman!" The corner box features all four FF members — Thing, Human Torch, Invisible Woman, and Mr. Fantastic. A quintessential Bronze Age Marvel cover that perfectly captures the era's bombastic, monster-movie energy.

Featured Characters

  • The Thing (Ben Grimm)
  • Invisible Woman (Sue Richards)
  • Human Torch (Johnny Storm)
  • Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) — corner box
  • Gorr — giant alien creature antagonist

George Pérez — Early Career Work

This issue features interior art by George Pérez — one of the most celebrated artists in comic book history, best known for his legendary runs on Avengers, New Teen Titans, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Wonder Woman. Pérez's work on Fantastic Four in 1976 is early-career material, predating his superstar status, making these issues increasingly sought after by Pérez collectors. Inked by Rich Buckler, another celebrated Bronze Age Marvel artist.

Series Context

Fantastic Four was Marvel's flagship title — "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine!" as proudly proclaimed on every cover. The Roy Thomas era of FF in the mid-1970s is well-regarded for its ambitious storytelling and rotating roster of talented artists. Issue #171 is a fun, action-packed standalone monster story that showcases the FF at their Bronze Age best.

Back Cover

Features a period-authentic full-page advertisement for American Seed Co. — the classic "Make Money, Get Prizes with Fast Selling American Seeds" promotion offering 100 prizes (fishing outfits, transistor radios, guitars, wrist watches, tennis rackets, cassette tape recorders, telescopes, chemistry sets, bicycles, typewriters, magic sets, microscopes, and more) in exchange for selling seed packets at 40¢ each. American Seed Co., Dept. 646, Lancaster, PA 17604. A beloved and iconic 1970s comic book back cover advertisement — instantly nostalgic for any Bronze Age collector.

Condition & Grading

Graded and encapsulated by CGC (Certified Guaranty Company), the industry's leading comic book grading authority. An 8.5 (Very Fine+) is a strong grade for a 1976 Bronze Age newsprint book, representing a copy with minor wear consistent with age but no major defects. White Pages is the best possible page quality designation. Verify authenticity at cgccomics.com using cert # 0096138006.
